- reported that client University of Pennsylvania won a bronze Telly award for a video Allied Pixel produced for the Wharton School of Business. The video, the centerpiece of Wharton’s annual appeal for the Wharton Fund, featured six Wharton graduate students at iconic locations on campus explaining how they personally benefit from the generosity of donors. Allied Pixel also handled HD video-streaming services to support a large-scale, global e-blast.
- reported that client Crestron Electronics won a bronze Telly award for its corporate overview video. The five-minute video serves as the centerpiece of Crestron’s new, multimillion-dollar Experience Center at its corporate headquarters in Rockleigh, N.J. The video, which was written, directed and produced by Allied Pixel, gives a behind-the-scenes tour of Crestron’s research, engineering, manufacturing and distribution facilities. It was mastered to Blu-ray and plays continuously on the large plasma display in the Grand Pavilion of the Experience Center.

- reported that Aptalis Pharma is now the name of Axcan Intermediate Holdings Inc. The rebranding follows the recently completed combination of two specialty pharma companies focused on gastrointestinal diseases: Axcan and Eurand. Embrella Cardiovascular

- was acquired by Edwards Lifesciences Corporation, a global leader in the science of heart valves and hemodynamic monitoring. Embrella Cardiovascular is developer of the Embrella Embolic Deflector System, which can be used during transcatheter heart valve procedures. The purchase price was approximately $43 million cash.

- hired Chris Sklarin as Investment Manager to generate investment opportunities and cultivate relationships with deal referral sources in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. His areas of focus include mobile, healthcare IT and e-commerce. Sklarin is also a Director of Business Development with BioEnterprise, a Cleveland-area Venture Accelerator, for which he advises Healthcare IT companies on business formation, capital access and growth. Prior to BioEnterprise, he was Director of Business Development with Chrysalis Ventures, for which he opened three Midwest offices. Previously, Sklarin was part of the initial team at JumpStart, a venture development organization and seed investor in Cleveland. He began his career with several software companies in Boston. Sklarin earned an MBA at the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley and graduated with an SB in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The specialty investment bank initiated discussions between the parties and structured the transaction.

- closed a transaction to invest $150,000 in Real Time Tomography, LLC, a medical imaging technology firm based in suburban Philadelphia. The Garber Venture Capital Fund is an MBA student-centric VC fund at the Penn State Smeal College of Business. Used within a course environment, the fund allows Smeal MBA students to experience first hand all aspects of venture capital investing.

RES Software is a leader in dynamic desktop solutions. Throughout his career, Bonacci has been responsible for managing global sales and strategies for large technology companies and brings more than 15 years of experience in technology sales and leadership to his new role. Most recently, Bonacci was Global VP of Strategic Sales at Wyse Technology, where he increased federal sales revenue 150% in 12 months. Prior to working at Wyse, he led sales efforts at Symantec Software as Global Director of Sales and Endpoint Virtualization.

- renewed its marketing alliance with Thomson Reuters, a leading source of intelligent information for business and professionals. Each company will work together to provide Scherrer’s Ally CRM and SFA technology to mutual clients who are investment advisors. This licensing, marketing and technical transfer agreement involves the two companies’ platform products. Scherrer Resources’ popular Ally CRM software product will be offered to customers of Thomson Reuters. The relationship is fully supported by the Scherrer customer service professionals who were deployed specifically for use by Thomson Reuters customers.
University City Science Center

- reported that Adaptimmune LLC and Optofluidics, Inc., have established offices at the University City Science Center’s Port Business Incubator. Adaptimmune Ltd., founded in 2008 in the U.K., chose the Science Center as the location of its U.S. subsidiary, Adaptimmune LLC. Adaptimmune is focused on the use of T cell therapy to treat cancer and infectious disease. Optofluidics, founded in 2010, focuses on developing microfluidic and biophotonic devices for point-of-care medical diagnostics, chemical agent detection and biomedical instrumentation.
- reported that President and CEO Stephen S. Tang, PhD, MBA, was named to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s new Innovation Advisory Board. The 15-member Innovation Advisory Board, established under the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010, will guide a study of U.S. economic competitiveness and innovation to help inform national policies at the heart of U.S. job creation and global competitiveness. The board will advise the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, in coordination with the National Economic Council and other federal agencies, on the development of the study. Board members will serve until the completion of the study in 2012.
